MEDIAGIRLS Part II @ Brookline Teen Center
Lesson 1: The unspoken rules of social media
In this first class, MEDIAGIRLS talk about the pros and cons of social media, and create a list of the unspoken "girl rules" that are followed by most girls on Instagram, Snapchat and other apps. What becomes clear quickly is that there is a seemingly endless amount of rules to follow, and that rather bringing girls closer, social media adds more pressure in girls' lives. Whereas social media can definitely be fun and connecting, right now it ends up creating feelings of disconnection because have all these rules to follow and can't just be themselves. We're going to change that, and these girls are excited to be among the first pioneers!
Our New Girl Rules:
Lesson 2: Creating a game plan for our #MGMakeover campaign
We started our second class with a free association activity, in which we asked girls to respond to simple words and phrases like "Finstagram," "Texting instead of phoning," "Favorite ways to spend time on social media," and "# of times retake photos before posting." As you can see the girls had a lot to say, and commented on each other's "posts"...
For much of the class, we looked at samples of social-media campaigns that are positive and had strong followings so we could decide what we want to borrow, and how they want to execute our own campaign next week. Some of the campaigns we explored: #MeToo, #IceBucketChallenge, #InspiringWomenRunners, and #DistractinglySexy.
The girls then brainstormed about the social media campaign they want to create using video and blog. The theme is how to to make social media a more positive place for girls, where they feel supported and inspired. We came up a bunch of rules/challenges they want to focus on and then picked their top four (see below). Hands down their favorite was the challenge of girls using social media to express their authentic selves, and putting an end to curated "perfect" feeds. So that's where we'll begin - stay tuned!
